For fall 2024, the top jacket trends include fresh twists on timeless classics as well as innovative designs—think structured work jackets, retro bombers, and new leather silhouettes. To get a pulse on what’s trending, we consulted three stylists for their insights on the must-have jackets of the season. Read on for eight fall jacket trends that are bound to be everywhere in the next few months.
Oversized Leather Jackets
Investing in a leather jacket is a timeless choice, and this season, celebrity stylists Danielle and Alix anticipate that the oversized variation of this classic piece will be particularly stylish. “It’s the piece you’ll reach for to layer with skirts and dresses to provide both warmth and an edgier spin,” they tell us, adding that they recommend pairing it with “a belt, a cool pair of sunnies, and your favorite designer bag.” Both stylists think that vintage styles are worth the investment, and they recommend Rebalance Vintage as well as Worn Vintage as sites to get started with shopping.

Retro Varsity Bombers
“We’ve been loving the resurgence of the ’90s vibe, and a retro sporty jacket is a great way to incorporate it into a look,” Danielle and Alix tell us. When it comes to shopping, don’t forget to check the men’s section for the ideal oversized look and feel. The two recommend checking out Mitchell & Ness, which has all the major sports teams available as well as many new retro-inspired pieces. Looking for more options? “Any vintage Nike or Adidas sporty bomber will accomplish the look, and you can style this type of jacket with a mini dress or denim skirt to give a bit of feminine flair,” they add.
Fashion designer and stylist Jonathan Marc Stein recommends styling this type of jacket “with an elevated streetwear aesthetic and athleisure top and pants for an effortless look. They can be worn with casual and also more professional combinations,” he says.

Work Jackets
If you’re looking for something different from a denim or leather jacket, this is the one for you. “The ‘work’ jacket, originated from Carhartt, has made a slow comeback to fall fashion, and we’re sure it will be a big trend this coming season,” Danielle and Alix tell us. “We’re seeing brands across the spectrum create their own version of this style, from Miu Miu to Elwood to Lioness, along with various colors from Carhartt themselves.”
Stein emphasizes the jacket’s popularity: “This utilitarian style is definitely trending,” he says, specifically mentioning the “distressed look, trimmed with leather and a corduroy collar.” In terms of styling, he suggests layering this jacket with a hoodie or sweater as temperatures get cooler.

Fleeces
No longer limited to outdoor practicality, the fleece jacket is certain to be everywhere this fall. It's the ideal option to “throw over a more casual look, from a workout set to jeans and a tee,” Danielle and Alix explain.
“The latest trends in fleece jackets offer an upgrade from the traditional fleece, with additions like gold zippers or unique collar styles,” Stein says. For a style-forward look, Stein recommends a cropped version of the fleece because it offers “[more form-fitting] lines versus the traditional longer styles.”

Shearling-Trimmed Leather Jackets
Shearling jackets have long been a wardrobe staple, combining style with warmth. Recently, there’s been a rising trend in hybrid jackets that blend shearling with leather. “We’ve noticed this combo gaining popularity over the past few years, and we expect it to keep going strong,” say Grey Bandit founders Courtney and Lindsey Glasser. Layer it over all your favorite fall style staples, and don’t forget a statement handbag.

Faux Fur
We saw more and more faux fur jackets take center stage last fall, and the Glassers have no doubt that the material will be back this season “in a variety of lengths and colors.” Depending on the fabric, a faux fur can be effortlessly elegant. “Whether cropped, knee, or ankle length a faux fur coat can be a nice wardrobe centerpiece,” Stein explains.
In addition, faux fur coats are becoming more eco-friendly with updated technology as “new faux fur materials are composed of natural fibers versus plastic, allowing for a more eco-friendly approach,” Stein tells us. Danielle and Alix also mention that printed fur coats, which the duo calls “the perfect mix of neutral and interesting,” will be everywhere this fall.

Unique Moto
Many fall jacket trends are leaning edgier, according to the Glassers. Moto jackets “can come in a lot of different looks, but edgy flair is something we’re seeing added,” they tell us. Danielle and Alix suggest Rebalance Vintage for sourcing unique moto jackets: “They take all the hard work out of thrifting and have a wide range of styles and designs.” Just add biker boots, and you’ll feel instantly cool.

Long Trench Silhouettes
A trench coat is something you’ll have in your closet forever, as it can elevate any look. “This is a classic and will likely be done in so many ways this fall,” the Glassers say of this staple turned fall jacket trend. “[Expect to see] different hues, fun textures, and even hints of plaid.” Stein thinks that pairing a long, floor-length trench coat with your favorite outfit will instantly elevate your look.
