Rihanna’s Chrome French Mani Puts a Spin on Spring’s Favorite Nail Trend

If you were to guess one celeb who would not only rock a square French manicure but make it all their own, who would you pick? I’ll be fair… square French manicures are everywhere right now, so it’s kind of a hard question. But all signs point to Rihanna when it comes to the “make it all their own” component, right?

While celebrating the launch of Fenty Beauty’s new Soft’lit Naturally Luminous Longwear Foundation ($40) in Los Angeles on April 26, the makeup mogul showed off a (slightly deep) square French manicure with the addition of a shimmery layer of chrome powder, applied by her manicurist, Kim Truong.

During a red carpet interview, the Grammy winner was asked if she prefers almond- or coffin-shaped nails. “Almond,” she said hesitantly as she looked down at her finger beds, quickly coming back to the interviewer, Kirbie Johnson, with a bit of sass. “They’re not almond or coffin, but you asked me almond or coffin. Square is my favorite.”

I think we knew that already, though? The last manicure we saw Rihanna rock was a long, square-shaped, and chili pepper red shade that she wore to the FENTY x PUMA Creeper Phatty Earth Tone launch party in London a couple of weeks ago. A purple French tip came before that, whereas square-shaped milk bath nails were all the rage for her last summer.

After the interviewer noted that she’d also worn coffin in the past, Rihanna was blown away. “I’ve done coffin? Ew.” (No offense to coffin lovers everywhere! We’re unbiased here.)

To complete her recent coffin-nails-nowhere-to-be-seen look, the mom of two wore her light blonde hair down and sleek, this time styling her new bangs to the side. Square-shaped French manicure? Check. Chrome powder? Check. Side bangs? Triple check. Do we need to know anything else for spring, glam wise, or can we just book our appointments and enjoy the weather now? Sorry, that’s an even harder question—I’ll ask again in a week.
