SZA’s Hand-Painted Manicure Features Butterflies and Ladybugs

While I don't necessarily like bugs, I get the point of them: pollination, the food chain, etc. Plus, if not buzzing around your face, they can be kind of amazing to look at (were you also indoctrinated by the 2006 nature documentary boom as a child??). With that being said, I can't say no to a bug motif every once in a while—even if I'm a fake fan who'd rather identity-steal than hang out with the creatures in real life. From far away, ladybugs are cute! Grasshoppers have an impressive vocal range. Plus, there are the excellent color schemes.

While I’m not sure what her personal relationship with the animal world is, SZA seems to agree. On April 1, the singer attended the iHeartRadio Music Awards in Los Angeles wearing yet another fascinating manicure, this time highlighting a bunch of spring-y species.

The manicure was the creation of nail artist Tyler, who has taken inspiration from the animal world before. Last June, they tackled 3D beetle nails while frogs were on the agenda this week. For the “Snooze” singer’s look, he began with a classic, chunky, squoval-shaped French manicure before painting on tiny and intricate flying creatures. Her thumb on one hand featured a green beetle, while a green mantis showed off on her pointer finger. A butterfly wing, ladybugs, and blue… dragonfly with legs?… also made an appearance. On the other hand (literally), I spotted a bumblebee. Ants also marched by every so often.

Bug nails are nothing new, but this take feels especially fresh—especially with the chunky French manicure twist. The 34-year-old paired the design with an also-springy plunging yellow long-sleeved dress that ended at her ankles, allowing her sandals (and plain as far as I can tell white pedicure) to peek out.

To finish the look, she wore her hair in its signature voluminous and mermaid-y waves, adding another killer pink gloss with brown liner lip combo to the total package.

What can I say? A new SZA look never bugs me.
